New Yu Yu Hakusho Series Announced by Netflix

Following the release of Yu Yu Hakusho on Netflix back in June, the local release of the Yu Yu Hakusho OVAs in Japan and success of the Yu Yu Hakusho stage play, It was only a matter of time before we would see more interest develop in the franchise. And so, today it was revealed that Netflix Japan and ROBOT (Alice in Borderland) have teamed up to create a live action Netflix Original Yu Yu Hakusho series.

Unfortunately, few details of the project have been announced so far but we do know that it will feature Teru Morii and Kazutaka Sakamoto (Devilman Crybaby, Aggretsuko) as producer and executive producer respectively. Additionally, the Yu Yu Hakusho Netflix Original series is set to debut internationally at the same time but no release window has been speculated as of yet.

Although many will rejoice at the news of a live-action Yu Yu Hakusho series, some will shudder at the thought of another live-action adaption of a beloved series. After all, recalling memories of Dragon Ball Evolution, Avatar and Netflix’s Deathnote is enough to make even the toughest of anime fan whimper. The potential saving grace of this series however is that the Yu Yu Hakusho live-action series will be produced by a Japanese team at Netflix Japan and led by executive producer Kazutaka Sakamoto, a long time fan of the series. Kazutaka hopes to create a faithful and beloved adaption which will spread the joy of Yu Yu Hakusho to another generation. One thing can be said for sure, there will be a lot of disappointed fans if the show fails to live up to the hype of the original anime.

I grew up watching Yu Yu Hakusho and the impact and enthusiasm of that time remains a vivid memory. Even after 20 years, the momentum has not diminished, and fans have spread all over the world including Asia. As we continue, we will make the most of Netflix's highly flexible expression platform to create the series. In addition to story development in each episode without scale restrictions, the best teams from home and abroad will work on this project. I am delighted to be able to maximize the appeal of the original series and share it with the world.
